Apple iPad Sales by Quarter

Apple has sold more than 84 million iPads since its debut 2010. The latest model debuted just two weeks before the start of Apple’s April-June quarter, which became a record-setter in iPad sales.

Several challengers have come along, including Amazon.com Inc. with its Kindle Fire. New versions were unveiled on Thursday.

Here’s the breakdown of iPad sales by quarter. Amazon does not disclose Kindle sales figures:

— 3.3 million in fiscal third quarter 2010 (through June 26); iPad went on sale April 3, 2010.

— 4.2 million in fiscal fourth quarter 2010 (through Sept. 25)

— 7.3 million in fiscal first quarter 2011 (through Dec. 25)

— 4.7 million in fiscal second quarter 2011 (through March 26); iPad 2 went on sale March 11, 2011.

— 9.3 million in fiscal third quarter 2011 (through June 25)

— 11.1 million in fiscal fourth quarter 2011 (through Sept. 24)

— 15.4 million in fiscal first quarter 2012 (through Dec. 31, 2011)

— 11.8 million in fiscal second quarter 2012 (through March 31, 2012); third-generation iPad went on sale March 16.

— 17 million in fiscal third quarter 2012 (through June 30, 2012).

Thoughts on the Rumored iPad Mini

According to iMore, who holds an exceptional track record for predicting Apple products, the next generation iPhone 5 is said to be released Friday, September 21 just 9 days after its debut event. So what are the chances that Apple will unveil two incredible devices, the iPhone 5 and this rumored iPad Mini on the same day? Slim to none, or will Apple reward us all and release them within just days of each other?

If this is the case and we will in fact have the opportunity to have a mini iPad in our hands come September, how many consumers are actually interested in purchasing it? Competing with the new $199 Google Nexus and Amazon’s Kindle, I think the biggest thing Apple will have to focus on is the price point. If it’s anything more than $299 they may have a hard time getting it off the shelves, on the other hand if they price it competitively around $199-$249 it would almost be considered an impulse buy for some. CouponCodes4u, on online coupon site polled 1,873 American consumers on their thoughts about the iPhone 5 and the iPad Mini. Of those surveyed, 78% would choose the iPhone 5 rather than the mini – however, the results may be skewed as 77% of the consumers already owned an iPhone and perhaps are just interested in the newest version.

There’s a lot of skeptics wondering why Apple would release a 7″ inch tablet, in fear that it would be too similar to the current iPad or iPhone. However, considering how well the smaller tablet market has been doing and the fact that Apple already owns about two-thirds of the global tablet market, there’s no doubt they’re highly capable of creating a product to compete directly with the others. So if these iPad mini rumors are in fact true it will easily allow Apple to expand their ownership of the tablet market to a bit more than two-thirds. If Apple was smart, which indeed they are, they would release the iPhone 5 with the iPad mini shortly after just in time for the holiday season. Not to get your hopes up but I believe there’s been an increase in talks on the release of an Apple iTV as well?

iPads in the Classroom and Their Continued Growth

When you think about the integration of technology into classrooms it seems like just yesterday when we were referring to the use of big PC desktops, high-tech projectors, and scientific calculators. A few years later and all that has changed. Last quarter Apple reportedly sold 17 million iPads, 1 million of these were to the education market alone. That’s incredible considering the sales are still growing strong for those iPads being implemented into schools this fall.

“The adoption rate of iPad in education is something I’ve never seen from any technology product in history,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “Usually, education tends to be a fairly conservative institution in terms of buying, or K-12 does, and we’re not seeing that at all on the iPad.” A majority of schools purchased the iPad 2 for $399 (about $100 less than the new iPad). The drop in price point seemed to open up the door to schools, especially those in the K-12 range.

It’s just like a new toy – everyone wants to be the first to own it, hence all the schools jumping on board. The iPad is on its way to becoming an instrumental education device that won’t be going out of style anytime soon. What makes the iPad so perfectly unique is that it’s adaptable to nearly any curriculum with its numerous apps and software which will surely be updated to align closely with teacher’s lessons. Not only are iPads more affordable than most computers and laptops, but they are mobile, allowing students to continue their education and assignments beyond the classroom. A majority of staff members hope this integration will instill a passion for learning in their students as well as help to improve teaching and engagement in general. It’s clear that the use of iPads in the classroom is rapidly increasing and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. El Paso Public Schools: 7,200 iPads – About a third of a nearly $9.9 million grant will be used to purchase the iPads – “28,000 EPISD students to use iPads in fall”

Hopi Elementary: 180 iPads – donated to students by the Hopi Dad’s Club – “iPads to usher in new era of education at Hopi Elementary”
